Over the weekend, thousands of Zohran Mamdani supporters took to the streets as part of a citywide scavenger hunt organized by the campaign. But the Democratic mayoral nominee’s competitors and detractors were quick to try to denounce the event as frivolous — another sign of the growing tensions in the race as Election Day draws nearer.

Scavenger-hunt participants were tasked to follow a series of clues related to New York mayoral history beginning at the Tammany Hall building in Manhattan and ending at the café Little Flower in Astoria, Queens, where Mamdani took photos with supporters who made it to the end. Per the campaign, more than 4,000 New Yorkers took part in the event and the announcement video posted Saturday received more than 20 million views across social-media platforms.
