PERRY Co., Ky. (WYMT) - August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Health officials said breastfeeding can be one of the most important things mothers should do for their babies.
Public Health Director for the Kentucky River District Scott Lockard said breastfeeding can nourish and nurture a baby. He said it can even have emotional benefits for both the mother and the baby.
“Breast milk is best for the first six months of that infant’s life,” Lockard said. “It translates into just a whole range of health benefits later on for the infant, immediate health benefits with fewer infections, less likely to get sick, better weight gain and just the nutritional benefits.”
Lockard and other health experts said the WIC Program can help low-income pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding moms.
