The Michigan Wolverines are handing the keys to a true freshman as they are set to name Bryce Underwood the starting quarterback for the season opener against New Mexico on August 30. Underwood, who is the top overall recruit in this year's signing class, won the job over Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene.
Last year's starter, Davis Warren, is still out after tearing his ACL in the Wolverines' bowl win last season. Underwood was the presumed favorite from the beginning, and he did nothing to deter those thoughts during preseason practice.
Underwood originally committed to LSU over Michigan, but a strong NIL deal brought him back to Michigan late in the recruiting process. He is from Belleville, Michigan, which is just 22 miles from the University of Michigan and was a big get for the Wolverines.
Underwood was great in high school, as he led Bellville to two state championships and he won 38 straight games for them.
"He's grown every single day he's been on campus," Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said during Big Ten media days. "And he does everything the right way."
The Wolverines host New Mexico on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET before Underwood gets his first big test the next week at Oklahoma. The Wolverines will play in Norman on Sept. 6 6 in a night game.
