Oil prices in the low $60s a barrel, have helped offset increases.

An outage at the Midwest’s largest refinery led gasoline prices in Michigan to spike this week, sending them up — on average — 18 cents a gallon from the week before to $3.30, a week ahead of Labor Day weekend.

The gas price average nationwide, $3.15 a gallon, also increased.

"The national average saw a modest increase over the last week after storms temporarily knocked the Midwest’s largest refinery offline in Indiana," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, which tracks gas prices, adding that the outage also triggered "sharp jumps in gas prices across Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan."
