(QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- The Belmont Police Department is asking residents to remain indoors due to a developing situation on the Catawba River involving a heavy police presence.

Authorities said the incident is currently contained to the river area between Catawba Cove Drive, The Conservancy neighborhood, and the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden.

Police have not released details about the nature of the situation, but they are working with other agencies to resolve it safely.

Officials have confirmed the public should stay away from the area while the response continues.

Gaston County communications also confirmed the police activity but said all official updates will come from Belmont Police.
