WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Trump signed several executive orders Monday morning, seeking to impose jail time on those who burn the American flag and ending the option of cashless bail in D.C.

The order criminalizing flag burning may face challenges in court. In 1989, a mostly conservative Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that flag-burning is protected free speech under the First Amendment.

Trump also signed an executive order taking aim at cashless bail, specifically within the District of Columbia but targeting other jurisdictions with similar policies.

Cashless bail replaces traditional bail money with a promise to appear in court. Those who commit crimes of a particularly violent nature usually do not receive the option of cashless bail.
