SOLANA BEACH — It may well be the greatest upset victory in the history of the CIF San Diego Section boys water polo playoffs.

Facing a 7-2 halftime deficit, upstart Santa Fe Christian pulled even with perennial power La Jolla in the 2006 Division 2 semifinals. With about 40 seconds to go, SFC called a timeout to plot its final shot.

The obvious strategy was to get the ball to offensive standout Graham Saber, who already had four goals. Instead, Saber suggested he could draw multiple defenders to clear an attempt for Jonny Haahr.

Just like that, Haahr converted a skip shot into the lower left corner for the go-ahead goal in a 10-9 victory. In the finals, SFC followed with a respectable showing in a 13-8 loss to Bishop’s.
