A number of oil and gas wells in western Colorado are among 142 statewide that have been approved for plugging funded by grants targeting the plugging of marginally producing wells.

Thirty companies have been approved to receive the grants through the state Energy and Carbon Management Commission’s Marginal Well Plugging Program, which seeks to reduce emissions of methane and other pollutants, according to a news release from the commission.

Wells to be plugged include five in Mesa County, six in Rio Blanco County, two in Garfield County, 14 in Moffat County, one in Routt County, seven in Dolores County, nine in San Miguel County and 13 in La Plata County.

Commission spokesperson Kristin Kemp said she didn’t yet have names of grant recipients to share yet.
