CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Monday marked the first day of school for Cedar Rapids Prep, a new charter school.

The school is currently operating in two floors at the former Transamerica site at Edgewood Road and 42nd Street NE, which sat vacant for years.

In its first year, CR Prep is welcoming 18 teachers and 260 students.

One of those teachers is Kristen Robinson, who teaches 6th and 7th grade math. She says students brought a lot of positive energy for the first day. “The excitement, the new school supplies. I mean, how can you beat the new school supplies, the nervous energy, but also the excitement and the hopes and dreams that kids have and families have coming into a new school year,” says Robinson.
