COLUMBIA, S.C. (WSAV) — The University of South Carolina Police Department (USCPD) said it believes Sunday's active shooter alert was part of a swatting hoax.
A similar hoax occurred earlier in the week at Villanova University.
USCPD said it received two calls Sunday reporting an active shooting that were initiated by an adult male with background noise that reportedly mimicked gunfire. USCPD said there is no evidence the calls originated on campus.
Two students received minor injuries exiting the library during the threat. Both were transported to the hospital and later released.
USCPD and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) are still investigating the incident.
