San Bernardino is getting ready for a party and everyone is invited. The city’s Norman F. Feldheym Central Library will soon be celebrating its 40th anniversary.

From 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, the free event “40 Years of Feldheym” is planned at the library, 555 W 6th St. The free event will be fun, honoring the wonderful educational gem and the legacy the library has carried on from its predecessors for over 140 years.

San Bernardino’s library system began in 1881 when citizens formed an association and provided the city’s first circulating library on Third Street.

John Isaacs was its first president and Henry Goodcell Jr. was the first secretary. Five prominent citizens were directors. A $3 admission fee and quarterly dues of 50 cents were set up. At that time there were 100 memb
