According to the Isle of Palms Police Department, two good Samaritans rescued the driver from the car before it sank underwater.
The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
The Isle of Palms Police Department and Fire Department responded to the scene. The U.S. Coast Guard was also notified and reported no environmental impact.
“This incident underscores the dangers of driving during severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and flooding, particularly at night,” said Police Chief Kevin Cornett. "Water can quickly obscure where the roadway ends and make it difficult to gauge depths."
