ALEXANDRIA — Starting Tuesday, Sept. 2, weather permitting, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin a pedestrian improvement project on Third Avenue/Highway 29 between Broadway and Nokomis Streets in Alexandria.

Through mid-October, Third Avenue will be reduced to one lane in both directions. Motorists should expect delays and consider alternate routes to avoid backups during peak travel times.

In 2023, MnDOT partnered with the city of Alexandria to identify issues and create a local vision for this section of the Highway 29 corridor as part of a pedestrian study. The project includes the following recommendations that came from that work:

Removing left turns at Hawthorne, Jefferson, Kenwood and Lake Streets.

Installing rapid flashing beacons at Jefferson and Lake Streets
