In what was the only true position competition for the Steelers this summer for a starting job, Corliss Waitman won out over Cameron Johnston to be the team’s punter.

It’s a major victory for Waitman but a cruel twist of fate for Johnston, whose significant leg injury last season opened the door for his successor in the first place. Waitman, 30, took over for Johnston, 33, last season when the latter went down in Week 1 at Atlanta.

Johnston and Waitman traded off punts throughout training camp practices and the preseason games, with Mike Tomlin letting it play out down to the wire. Waitman averaged 53.2 yards and 44.6 net yards over five punts while Johnston averaged 42.3 and 35.8 over six attempts.
