CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Carbondale police arrested a local man after an incident involving a vehicle and pepper spray during a protest on West Main Street.
The Carbondale Police Department said their officers responded to the 100 block of West Main Street on August 24, at 2:57 p.m., following reports of a vehicle swerving at protesters in the roadway.
Police identified the suspect as 78-year-old Douglas Wells of Carbondale. Wells was accused of driving through the area twice. Police reported he discharged pepper spray at a person who approached his vehicle during the second time he drove into the area.
When police arrived, they said the suspect had already left the scene.
Authorities later found Wells at his home and arrested him.
