SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg has announced her retirement after 36 years of service, effective October 6.
Mayor Lisa Brown named Tom Williams, the current Assistant Chief, as her successor starting October 7.
O’Berg, who joined the Spokane Fire Department in 2020, became the first woman to lead the department in April 2024.
Reflecting on her career, O'Berg expressed gratitude for the fire service, saying it provided her with "purpose, lifelong friendships, and the honor of serving something greater than myself."
Mayor Brown praised O’Berg's leadership, stating, “She has been a dedicated public servant and a tremendous leader, guiding the Spokane Fire Department through a significant time of transition.”
