BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Just 72 hours following the massive explosion at Smitty’s lubricant plant in Roseland, and oil residue remains.

“I can’t even cut my yard,” said Jerry McCoy of Roseland. ”I got the oil all on my socks there, I can’t walk in the grass. I can’t cut my yard, I’m scared to cut it.”

McCoy lives not far from where the explosion occurred. He hopped in his car and was at Smitty’s just after the blast happened.

McCoy and others in a 1-mile radius of the plant had to evacuate. Environmental experts say it’s safe for most of those folks to return now.

Additionally, students will be back in school tomorrow at Roseland Montessori.

McCoy didn’t hold back; he’s confident in the efforts to keep the children at school safe, but still has his worries.
