TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCJB) - Florida law enforcement is stepping up checks on truck drivers, including English proficiency tests, as part of a broader push to keep unsafe drivers off the road.
At agriculture inspection stations across the state, officers are now testing drivers’ ability to speak and understand English. State leaders say the effort is meant to prevent tragedies like the deadly crash on the Florida Turnpike earlier this month, where three people were killed after hitting a semi making an illegal U-turn .
Investigators said the driver, who is in the country illegally, failed an English proficiency test but had commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) issued in both California and Washington. He now faces criminal charges.
