RUMFORD, Maine - Rumford Police Chief Tony Milligan provided an update Monday to the ongoing investigation into a chase, shooting and ensuing manhunt that prompted a shelter-in-place order in town more than a week ago.

The situation started Friday, August 15 around 10:30 p.m. when an officer came across a suspicious vehicle on Eaton Hill Road. When the officer stopped to investigate, police say the vehicle sped off and a chase ensued.

Milligan says the chase lasted about two minutes, and at one point, suspects in the vehicle opened fire at cruisers. One cruiser became disabled, and the officer was able to get out and rejoin other officers. Police say officers never fired back at the suspects.
