MADISON, Wis. -- A retrial is set to begin Tuesday morning for Devonte Gafford, one of the men accused of shooting and killing 20-year-old Devon Grant outside of the Harmony Apartments in July 2023.

"I'm going to do what I have to do for justice for my son," said Illisha Grant, the victim's mother.

Gafford faced trial in 2024, when a jury found him guilty of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

That jury, however, deadlocked on the other two charges: first-degree recklessly endangering safety as a party to a crime and first-degree intentional homicide as a party to a crime.

The deadlock led the judge to declare a mistrial, leading to the retrial now taking place more than two years after Grant's death.

"The simplest way to put it is, it's a do-over," said UW-Madison Clinical Law
