CORONACA, S.C. — An earthquake struck the Coronaca area of Greenwood County on Monday afternoon. The quake was the third of the day and the 14th over the last week.

The 1.7 magnitude earthquake happened around 5:04 PM on Monday, August 25, 2025 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) northwest of Coronaca, South Carolina, according the US Geological Society (USGS) .

The Monday afternoon quake is the 14h recorded in the immediate area in the past week, indicating the beginning of a possible earthquake "swarm" similar to the one experienced near the Lugoff-Elgin area, where dozens of small quakes shook the area throughout 2022.

The earthquakes near Coronaca, which is about 7 miles east of Greenwood, began on August 19 with two small quakes - a 2.2 and a 1.7 magnitude - with eight, including a 3.0
