SANTA MONICA – Santa Monica Police Department police chief Ramon Bautista abruptly resigned from his position on Aug. 22 and it is likely due to “clashing views on public safety.”

The Santa Monica Lookout reported on a 1,000 word, four page letter, Bautista submitted to the city manager which gave a small glimpse into the presumed conflict between the two surrounding public safety issues.

As I step aside, I do recognize that my nearly 40 years of experience in public safety and policing, my deeply held sense of justice, and following not only the spirit, but the letter of the law, appear to be at odds from demands set by the new administration. Ramon Bautista

Oliver Chi was recently installed as the city manager and served in the same position in various cities around Orange County.
