Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey on Monday expressed support for a longstanding cooperation agreement between the state's Department of Correction and federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement through which ICE is notified when an undocumented inmate is close to being released.

The agreement, in place since 2007, has been authorized by successive governors and aims to identify and process undocumented immigrants incarcerated in the state correctional system who may be eligible for deportation.
Asked about the agreement, following a Boston Globe article published Sunday , Healey said that if an immigration detainer exists, the Department of Correction notifies ICE before releasing the inmate.
