CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KCRG) - A Girl Scout from Cedar Falls received the Gold Award for her push to fight period poverty in schools, a project that led to the development of Iowa Bill HF883.

Elle Smith, of Cedar Falls, has been recognized with the Gold Award for helping address period poverty in Iowa schools and playing a key role in creating an Iowa bill.

The bill aims to provide free and easy access to feminine products in school restrooms in the state of Iowa.

“Period poverty is when a woman doesn’t have the ability to pay for the items necessary during her period.
