MARTINS FERRY – Union Local and Martins Ferry hooked in a thriller Monday night inside Tolbert Gymnasium with the Purple Riders claiming a 5-set victory in high school volleyball action.

The visiting Jets won the first game 25-18 before the Purple Riders drew even with a 25-19 nod. Martins Ferry also won the third game 25-22 before Union Local caused a fifth set with a 25-12 triumph in the fourth game. In the deciding game, the Purple Riders posted a 15-8 win.

Giana Chirpas paced Martins Ferry with 18 kills, seven digs, three blocks and four service aces, while Nicole Hammerquist added 10 kills and a trio of blocks. Maddie Lucas charted nine kills and 10 digs. SJ Koller had 38 digs; Olivia Harkness six service aces and 19 assists; and Lexi Carte eight kills and 10 digs.
