CANYON COUNTY, Idaho — Canyon County commissioners recently voted to allocate $7.5 million from the county's reserve funds to build a women's jail facility, moving forward with a project that has been stalled for nearly two decades.
"We promised taxpayers last year that we would ask people to do more with the same, and that's exactly what we've done," Commissioner Leslie Van Beek said.
The new facility will be built on a field off Highway 20-26 on Pond Lane in Caldwell.
The approval came as part of the county's budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Sheriff Kieran Donahue said that since the county bought the land nearly two decades ago, they have failed to pass a bond for a new jail three times.
Donahue said the new plan will finally deliver the much-needed space they have been missing.
