Venus Williams put up a valiant fight before falling to Karolina Muchova . The 45-year-old’s level at her age was remarkable, and she justified the decision to award her a wild card. Williams grew into the match after a slow first few game s and won the second set comfortably, but she ran out of steam in the end. Muchova did very well to stay composed, triumphing 6-3 2-6 6-1.
