BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - American women won the right to vote on this day in history in 1920.
After getting passed by Congress, the 19th Amendment needed the ratification of 36 states, and Tennessee became the deciding one.
Vermont was not a deciding state.
In 1919, Governor Percival Clement vetoed the legislature’s approval.
Vermont would eventually ratify the amendment in 1921 after it was already the law of the land.
