Twenty years ago, when the Starland District was still a patchwork of warehouses and empty lots, a group of young artists staged a play as improbable as their dreams for the neighborhood itself.

In 2005, Mickle Maher’s An Apology for the Course and Outcome of Certain Events Delivered by Doctor John Faustus on This His Final Evening was performed in a converted warehouse during the old art march. At the time, Starland Yard was little more than a dusty parking lot. The play’s themes—ambition, absurdity and reckoning—echoed the artists’ bold vision for turning Starland into a creative sanctuary.
