BERLIN - Canada is establishing a critical minerals partnership with Germany aimed at promoting joint public financing for natural resource projects. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that essential Canadian minerals, such as nickel and cobalt, have remained underdeveloped while China and Russia have taken the lead in the global critical minerals market.
Carney stated that the partnership will also focus on enhancing cooperation in energy sectors, particularly in liquefied natural gas and hydrogen energy. He is currently on a five-day tour of Europe and is scheduled to meet with German business leaders later today.
During a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz this morning, Carney and Merz discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine. They both agreed that any decisions regarding Ukraine's future should involve the country itself. This partnership reflects a strategic move by Canada to strengthen its position in the critical minerals market and to foster closer energy ties with Germany.
