Single-sourcing archeological investigations on municipal land to the Westbank First Nation might not be in the best interests of Kelowna taxpayers, some city councillors believe.

The band billed the city $160,000 for archeological work done in the southeast corner of City Park prior to construction of an off-leash dog park. The charge amounted to about 15 per cent of the project’s entire cost of more than $1 million.

“Our current agreement with WFN is that they are in charge of archeological activities,” infrastructure manager Geert Bos told councillors at Monday’s meeting. “We basically get the bill from WFN . . . We have no influence on that process.”
