Attorney and frequent President Donald Trump critic George Conway says Americans are too busy laughing at Trump to see the threat he poses to U.S. democracy.

CNN reports this week that Trump is not ruling out the possibility of a criminal investigation into his former ally and ex-New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

“I always felt he was guilty,” Trump told reporters, “but what he did is he took the George Washington Bridge, which was very serious. He closed down the George Washington Bridge. If [DOJ leaders] want to look at it, they can. You could ask [AG] Pam [Bondi] … but I always thought he got away with murder.”

The Fort Lee lane closure scandal in 2013, better known as Bridgegate, involved staff of then-governor Christie creating traffic jams in the New Jersey city of Fort Lee by closing two of three lanes at the main toll plaza of the George Washington Bridge. Critics claimed Christie ordered staff to deliberately inconvenience Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich for not supporting Christie as a candidate in the 2013 gubernatorial election.

Conway said Trump is rehashing the bridge issue because Trump is “all about vengeance.”

"He's obsessed with defeating his enemies, defeating, criticizing — and ultimately now because he has the power to do it — prosecuting people who disagree with him,” said Conway. “And this is not America. This is not healthy.”

Conway warned U.S. citizens are unfamiliar with authoritarianism inside their own borders and are incapable of recognizing it, but other nations have seen it and recognize what’s happening in the White House.

“They're seeing what happened with Franco in Europe,” said Conway. “They're seeing what happened with Hitler, and this is how it's done. … [I]t's time for Americans to wake up.”

Conway added that Americans are also too busy laughing at Trump’s antics to see the threat he poses.

“This is serious. People may laugh at [Trump] because he … appears to be such a clown, but he's profoundly dangerous because he has the power of prosecution. And every time he says something like this, Americans should take note.”
