George Mason University's president will not apologize for the school's diversity efforts after the Department of Education called on him to issue a “personal apology … for promoting unlawful discriminatory practices in hiring, promotion, and tenure processes.”

Following a roughly six-week-long investigation of GMU’s hiring practices, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) found the Northern Virginia-based university violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race in public education.
