WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ohio —

Multiple people are seriously hurt after an oil rig explosion in Washington County, Ohio.

According to the fire chief, at least six people were hurt.

Four people were taken by helicopter for their injuries. Their current conditions are unknown.

Officials say the explosion happened as a contractor was plugging an orphan well, an oil and natural gas well which has been abandoned.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
