Echoing his boss, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick lashed out at Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, who President Donald Trump is trying to fire for allegedly committing mortgage fraud.
During his appearance Tuesday morning on CNBC, the brash Lutnick declared without evidence, “We can't have mortgage fraud in America, and you surely can't have it for your leaders. I mean, imagine anyone in the Cabinet who did this, you guys would be calling for their head. This woman should go away if she's committed the mortgage fraud and those signatures sure as heck look like hers.”
Noting the elephant in the room – Trump’s felony conviction for fraud in late 2023 – MSNBC host Joe Scarborough reacted to the video clip and smirked, “Irony is dead – yeah, dead, like, bring the flowers, put it on the grave. I mean, really?”
“That is kind of like going after [John] Bolton for mishandling classified documents. Irony is dead,” he repeated.
Co-host Jonathan Lemire also cast side-eye at Lutnick’s comments, adding, “Yes, and this is this concept of mortgage fraud is what they've done for Letitia James, the attorney general of New York. Senator [Adam] Schiff of California: no evidence yet, but that's the claim from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on President Trump's unproven allegations of mortgage fraud against Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.”
“Trump cited those allegations in a letter he shared on social media last night, saying that Cook's position on the reserve's board of governors would be terminated effective immediately,” he added. “Cook denies those allegations, saying she will not resign and the president has no legal cause to fire her.”
