NEW YORK — When the Yankees took a five-run lead in the bottom of the eighth inning on Sunday against the Red Sox, closer David Bednar sat down in the bullpen and struggling newbie Camilo Doval started to get loose.

Doval then entered to pitch the top of the ninth. When he gave up a leadoff single to Nathaniel Lowe, Bednar instantly reemerged on the Yankees’ bullpen mound, warming up in a hurry.
