The Solon City School District has banned e-bikes equipped with throttles on campus after a student was hit by a vehicle in the high school’s parking lot on the first day of school on Aug. 20.
The student sustained no serious injuries, but this incident, combined with an uptick in the number of reports of students using these bikes out of accordance with Ohio traffic laws, prompted the ban as a measure of student, staff and community safety, according to a letter sent to families on Aug. 21.
“It is crucial that our community understands that e-bikes are not exempt from traffic laws,” the letter read. “Cutting through traffic lanes, riding on sidewalks, performing reckless stunts and failing to yield to pedestrians are dangerous.
