ST. LOUIS — On Tuesday, before their game against the Cardinals, the Pirates designated left-hander Andrew Heaney for assignment.
Additionally, the Pirates called up right-hander Dauri Moreta from Triple-A Indianapolis and activated outfielder Oneil Cruz from the injured list. To clear a spot on the roster for Cruz, the Pirates optioned utilityman Ronny Simon to Indianapolis.
Heaney, 34, was signed to a one-year, $5.25 million contract in the offseason. He pitched well early, sporting a 2.91 ERA after 10 starts, but has struggled lately. He had a 9.00 ERA in July and a 10.13 ERA in August, including allowing five runs in ⅔ of an inning in a 7-6 loss to the Cardinals on Monday.
