Several dozen hospital nurses, elected officials and others rallied in Oakland on Tuesday, marking an historic vote by nurses to unionize a UPMC hospital.

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital registered nurses voted last week to be represented by SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania by a vote of 402 to 305. About 1,000 nurses will be represented by the bargaining unit.

Claims of inadequate staffing and other resources were central to the unionization drive at UPMC. Magee-Womens was the first of the Pittsburgh-based health system’s flagship hospitals to unionize after decades of failed union efforts.

Tuesday’s rally was held at Zelema Parklet on the Boulevard of the Allies, near the hospital.
