A 20-year veteran of the Calgary police service is accused of stealing more than $10,000 worth of items from local hardware stores over a year-long period.

Const. Bradley Tepper, 52, faces charges of fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) investigation began earlier this month following a complaint about "fraudulent activity and multiple thefts" from hardware stores in and around the city, according to a statement from the service.

Investigators identified a CPS officer as the suspect.

Tepper was charged on Tuesday.
