FIESTA Indianapolis , a popular annual event to celebrate Hispanic culture, was canceled by organizers due to safety concerns.
In a press release this week, the Latino nonprofit La Plaza, which organizes the event, announced that the festival was canceled "after thoughtful consideration of several factors beyond our control and, most importantly, out of deep concern for the safety and well-being of the Hispanic community," according to NBC affiliate WTHR.
FIESTA was set for September 20 at the American Legion Mall. La Plaza said it is a celebration of shared heritage, resilience, and joy.
"It is a little disappointing that we're in a time where we can't celebrate the culture in a safe way," Indianapolis resident Lina Caudill said to WTHR.
