The New World Screwworm (NWS), which has put America’s cattle producers on high alert this year, was recently confirmed in a human case. According to Reuters, the Maryland Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified the infection on August 4 in a patient returning from travel to El Salvador. The confirmation came just one week after U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins joined Texas Governor Greg Abbott to announce sweeping new plans to prevent the pest from advancing northward from Mexico and Central America.
