The parents of 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro have been charged with murder in connection with their son's disappearance. Jake Haro, 32, and Rebecca Haro, 41, were charged by the Riverside County District Attorney's office on Tuesday. They also face a misdemeanor charge for filing a false police report.
Emmanuel was reported missing on August 14, when Rebecca claimed he was abducted by a stranger outside a sporting goods store in Yucaipa, California. She stated that she was attacked and knocked unconscious, and when she regained consciousness, her son was gone. However, authorities have noted inconsistencies in her account, leading them to suspect the couple.
The couple was arrested on August 22, about a week after Emmanuel's disappearance. Investigators have stated that they believe the child is deceased, although his body has not been found. The Haros have a 2-year-old daughter who is now in the custody of Riverside County Child Protective Services.
On the day Emmanuel went missing, Riverside County sheriffs responded to a report of suspected child abuse linked to the Haros. This report was made near the location where Rebecca claimed the abduction occurred. The investigation into the child abuse report is ongoing, but authorities have not released further details.
Jake Haro has a prior conviction for child cruelty stemming from a 2018 incident involving his then 10-week-old daughter. He was sentenced to probation and required to complete a child abuse treatment program. His attorney previously expressed doubt about the couple's involvement in their son's disappearance.
Despite their arrest, Rebecca Haro has maintained her innocence, insisting that she had nothing to do with her son's disappearance. "I want to be out looking for my baby. I will not give up on my baby," she said in a recent interview. Jake was seen assisting police in the search for Emmanuel's remains while wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, although authorities clarified that he was not actively helping with the search.
Both parents are currently being held on $1 million bail. They are scheduled for arraignment, but it is unclear if they have legal representation. The investigation continues as authorities search for answers in this tragic case.
