MISSOULA — As the leading boys group approached the final tee box of Tuesday afternoon's round at The Ranch Club, there was still plenty on the line.
Missoula Sentinel senior Hudson Goroski led fellow Spartan, junior Jack Schaefer, by a pair of strokes. A bogey from the senior and a birdie from the junior, or an eagle from the junior, or even a blow-up hole from the senior, could all change the fate of the medalist race.
And yet, after the foursome took their tee shots, Goroski and Schaefer were there with first-year coach Sam Boyd, joking around about drivable distances and Schaefer potentially surpassing Goroski as he continues to mature. The levity of the situation, and the camaraderie of the Spartans squad, can be attributed to years of playing together, Schaefer told 406 MT Sports.
