The Newark Board of Education may extend Superintendent Roger León's contract by two years and make him one of the longest-serving superintendents in New Jersey.

An Aug. 24 public notice posted in New Jersey Advance Media’s classifieds announced the school board will hold a public hearing and take action on a proposed extension of León’s contract at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, at Ann Street School.

The new contract would replace the five-year, $1.5 million deal that was automatically renewed on May 15, 2022, the deadline the Newark school board would have had to notify León that it did not intend to renew his initial employment agreement. The district never announced that renewal, nor did it hold any public meetings about León’s contract extension.
