KOKOMO, Ind. (WPTA) - On August 26, 1985, 13-year-old Ryan White began attending his classes from home via a telephone hook-up after school officials barred him from attending in person after he was diagnosed with AIDS.
A few months later, Indiana’s Department of Education ruled White should be allowed to attend school in person, but school leaders appealed.
In February the following year, on White’s first day back at school, nearly half of his peers stayed home.
He eventually transferred to a school in Cicero, about 30 minutes away, due to bullying. The publicity from his story put White in the national spotlight, making the teen the poster child for the AIDS epidemic.
