PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Kroger is laying off nearly 1,000 corporate workers, including some local Fred Meyer employees.

In a statement, the company said the layoffs will not impact stores, distribution centers or manufacturing facilities, but are instead part of simplifying the organization.

It comes almost a year after a judge blocked a proposed merger between Kroger and Albertsons, which has led to a legal battle between the companies.
