ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order discouraging legal jurisdictions from using the cashless bail system in court proceedings. The President says this is part of a larger effort to eventually outlaw cashless bail entirely.
Currently, in jurisdictions where it's permitted, cashless bail allows for people who have been accused of a crime to be released from pretrial custody without having to pay any money.
The executive order permits the Trump Administration to review and eliminate federal funding from legal jurisdictions which do not move away from issuing cashless bail going forward.
Many law enforcement professionals including Wayne County Sheriff Rob Milby are against cashless bail. Milby explained why he supports the President's order.
