NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved an agreement that will lead to a new Maury High School costing more than $211 million.
The agreement between the city, the School Board and Heartland Construction provides for the construction of a new school to replace the oldest high school in the city with a new building along 20th Street and Llewellyn Avenue. The current Maury High building was built in 1911.
The vote has been delayed for months as some balked at the high price tag . However, City Council members said on Tuesday they were finally ready to move forward.
“I think the last few weeks and months of asking the pencils to be a little more refined on this have really paid off nicely,” said Councilwoman Courtney Doyle.
