A federal judge appointed by President Donald Trump dealt his administration a big blow on Tuesday.
U.S. District Judge Thomas Cullen, who normally sits on the federal court in Virginia, dismissed a lawsuit from the Justice Department against the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and all 15 of its judges for slowing down its deportation efforts.
In his opinion, Cullen called the administration’s effort against the judiciary “unprecedented and unfortunate.” He acknowledged that there will always be “some tension between the coordinate branches of government,” but noted that the administration is engaging in a “concerted effort” to “smear and impugn individual judges who rule against it.”
